Biblical Accountability for ‘Christian’ Leaders Gone Astray

In an era where faith is weaponized for political gain, it’s high time we drag the hypocrites into the light. Self-proclaimed “Christian” leaders in politics are twisting Scripture to justify power grabs, nationalism, and outright bigotry, all while ignoring the core of Christ’s teachings. As Philippians 3:2 warns, “Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh.” These aren’t just colorful insults from Paul—they’re a divine call-out for those who mutilate the Gospel for personal or political agendas. Let’s dive into recent scandals that expose this rot, applying sound biblical doctrine to hold these frauds accountable.

The Rise of Christian Nationalism in High Places

Look no further than the Trump administration’s cozy relationship with extreme Christian nationalists. Take Pete Hegseth, Trump’s Secretary of Defense, who’s been linked to Doug Wilson, a pastor whose views would make the Pharisees blush. Wilson, founder of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, has openly advocated for criminalizing same-sex relationships and even repealing women’s right to vote. Hegseth didn’t just nod along—he hosted Wilson at the Pentagon for an official prayer service, broadcasting it live throughout the building. This isn’t leadership; it’s idolatry, elevating a twisted “Christian” ideology over the Constitution and true faith.

Wilson’s network pushes for “Christian domination,” building an empire of churches, schools, and influence that echoes the warnings in 2 Peter 2:1-3: “But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies… In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories.” Hegseth’s own “raggedy” past, including allegations of infidelity and assault (which he denies), only amplifies the hypocrisy. How can a man with such baggage lead the nation’s defense while aligning with a pastor who dreams of a theocratic America?

And it’s not isolated. Paula White, head of Trump’s White House Faith Office, labeled the Black Lives Matter movement the “Antichrist” and twisted Scripture to defend harsh immigration policies. This office, stacked with Christian nationalists, has been denounced by over 400 Christian leaders as “cruel and oppressive,” pushing the U.S. toward authoritarian rule. These leaders rightly called out the administration’s “anti-Christian bias task force” as a witch hunt against dissent, a far cry from the humility Christ modeled.

Megachurch Moguls and Political Puppets

The scandals don’t stop at the White House. Robert Morris, founder of Gateway Church and a former Trump adviser, resigned amid allegations of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s. Morris hosted Trump at his church, calling him a “great man,” while hiding his own predatory past. This is straight out of Matthew 7:15: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” Morris’s fall joins a parade of disgraced megachurch pastors like Tony Evans and others who’ve abused power, from financial impropriety to sexual misconduct.

Then there’s Josh Buice of G3 Ministries, who resigned after using fake social media accounts to slander fellow Christians—behavior his own church called “sinful” and “deeply divisive.” In a world where Ephesians 4:25 commands, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor,” Buice’s deceit exposes the rot beneath the Reformed Baptist facade.

Even in smaller arenas, like a Tennessee town roiled by Christian nationalists questioning women’s suffrage and civil rights, the pattern holds: self-described faithful pushing regressive agendas under the banner of Christ. These aren’t anomalies; they’re symptoms of a broader disease where politics corrupts faith.

Biblical Reckoning: No More Excuses

Scripture doesn’t mince words about this hypocrisy. In Titus 1:16, Paul describes such leaders: “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.” These “Christian” politicians and pastors claim the moral high ground while endorsing cruelty, division, and personal gain. True biblical accountability demands we call them out—not with hate, but with the truth that exposes their evasion of God’s justice.

Jesus flipped tables on the hypocrites of His day (Matthew 21:12-13). Today, we must do the same: reject the fusion of faith and fascism, demand transparency, and return to a Gospel that uplifts the marginalized, not the mighty.
