Today, May 8, 2025, history was made. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was elected the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He took the name Pope Leo XIV. His election marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.

An American Pope
Pope Leo XIV’s election followed a two-day conclave. It involved 133 cardinals. The process culminated in the traditional white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel. Cardinal Dominique François Joseph Mamberti announced the new pope to the gathered faithful in St. Peter’s Square, who responded with jubilation.
Early Life and Ministry
Born in 1955 in Chicago to immigrant parents, Robert Prevost began his religious journey as an altar boy. He joined the Order of Saint Augustine and was ordained in 1982. His academic pursuits led him to Villanova University and the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. He also attended the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome. There, he earned a doctorate in canon law in 1987.
In 1985, Prevost’s missionary work took him to Peru. There, he served in impoverished communities. Later, he became the bishop of Chiclayo. His dedication to social outreach and pastoral care earned him dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru.
Vatican Leadership and Theological Perspectives
In 2023, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In this role, he oversaw the selection of bishops worldwide. This position elevated his profile within the Vatican and showcased his commitment to synodality and inclusivity.
Theologically, Pope Leo XIV is considered a moderate. He aligns with many of Pope Francis’s ideals. This is particularly true concerning social justice and compassion for migrants. He has expressed support for the poor and marginalized. At the same time, he maintains traditional stances on issues such as the ordination of women and views on homosexuality.
Papal Name Significance
The new pope has chosen the name Leo XIV. He draws inspiration from Pope Leo XIII. Pope Leo XIII was known for his advocacy of social justice and workers’ rights. This choice signals a continuation of a commitment to addressing contemporary social issues within the framework of Catholic doctrine.

A Prayer for Pope Leo XIV
Heavenly Father, we thank You for guiding the Church in electing Pope Leo XIV. Grant him wisdom, courage, and compassion as he leads Your people. May he be a beacon of unity and a shepherd to all, reflecting Your love and mercy. Strengthen him in his mission to serve the faithful and uphold the teachings of Christ. Amen.
