Celebrating the Heart of the Home: Happy Mother’s Day!
Today, we pause to honor the women who have shaped our lives with love, wisdom, and unwavering strength—our mothers. Whether by birth, adoption, or nurturing spirit, mothers embody the heart of the home and the soul of the family.
A Brief History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day in the United States was established largely through the efforts of Anna Jarvis. This happened in the early 20th century. Jarvis lost her mother in 1905. She then campaigned to create a day to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. Her efforts succeeded in 1914. President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation officially designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
However, the celebration of mothers dates back much further. Ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals to honor mother goddesses. Early Christians celebrated “Mothering Sunday.” This tradition still exists in parts of Europe today.
A Word from Scripture
The Bible offers many reflections on the virtue and value of mothers. One of the most beautiful comes from Proverbs 31:25-28 (NIV):
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue… Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

A Prayer for Mothers
Heavenly Father,
Today, we thank You for the gift of mothers—for their strength, compassion, and tireless love. Bless each mother with peace and joy. Give grace to those who are weary, comfort to those who are grieving, and hope to those waiting to become mothers. May their hearts be filled with Your presence and their hands continue to be used for Your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To All Mothers—We Celebrate You
To the birth moms, stepmoms, grandmothers, spiritual mothers, foster moms, and all who mother others in love—you are seen. You are valued. You are deeply appreciated.
Happy Mother’s Day!
O God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of your incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
