Yesterday, April 28th, 2025, Canadians across the country participated in a significant act of civic duty: casting their ballots in a federal election. As people of faith, we understand the importance of leadership and the responsibility that comes with governance. Now that the results are in, it’s a time for reflection, understanding, and, most importantly, prayer for our nation and its newly chosen leaders.
The Outcome: A Liberal Minority Government
The election results delivered a somewhat surprising outcome. The Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, secured the most seats in the House of Commons and will form the next government. Mr. Carney, who took over leadership from Justin Trudeau earlier this year, will continue as Prime Minister.

The Liberals did not secure enough seats for a majority government, winning only 172 out of 343. Early projections suggest they will end up with around 168 seats, which means they will be leading a minority government. This situation requires them to seek cooperation and support from other parties to pass legislation and maintain the confidence of the House.
The Conservative Party, under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre, finished second, winning around 144 seats. While the party increased its seat count from the previous election, Mr. Poilievre faced a personal setback, losing his own seat in his Ottawa riding. He has conceded defeat but pledged to hold the new government accountable.
Other parties faced significant challenges. The Bloc Québécois, focused on Quebec, won around 23 seats. The New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh, saw a dramatic drop in support, securing only about 7 seats. This is below the threshold for official party status, and Mr. Singh, who also lost his seat, announced he will step down as leader.
Key Dynamics and the “Fallout”
This election was marked by several key factors:
- A Liberal Comeback: Just months ago, polls suggested a strong Conservative lead. The Liberal victory marks a significant turnaround, partially attributed to Mark Carney’s leadership and a shifting political landscape.
- The Trump Factor: Relations with the United States, particularly comments and tariff threats from US President Donald Trump regarding Canadian sovereignty and trade, became a central theme. Many analysts believe this galvanized support for the Liberals, perceived by many voters as better positioned to navigate these external pressures. Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canadian unity and resilience in his victory speech.
- Minority Government Implications: A minority government often leads to more negotiation and compromise between parties. It can also mean less stability, as the government could fall on a vote of non-confidence. This situation underscores the need for leaders to seek common ground.
- Leadership Challenges: The election resulted in significant shifts, including Mr. Poilievre losing his seat (though vowing to remain leader) and Mr. Singh stepping down as NDP leader after substantial party losses.
A Call to Prayer and Reflection
As the dust settles, our faith urges us to respond not with partisanship but with prayer and thoughtful engagement. Scripture encourages us to pray “for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2, NIV).
Let us lift up Prime Minister Mark Carney and his incoming cabinet, asking for wisdom, humility, strength, and integrity as they lead. Let us also pray for Pierre Poilievre, Yves-François Blanchet, the Green Party leader, the new leader of the NDP when chosen, and all Members of Parliament from every party. May they seek the common good and work together constructively, especially within the dynamics of a minority parliament.
This election, like many others, has revealed divisions within our nation. Let us pray for unity, reconciliation, and respectful dialogue across differing viewpoints. As citizens, may we model grace and understanding in our conversations.
Let’s pray that the new government leads with compassion, seeks justice for all Canadians, protects the vulnerable, and fosters a society where everyone can flourish.
Looking Ahead
Canada faces challenges – navigating complex international relationships, ensuring economic stability and affordability, and strengthening national unity. These require wise leadership and engaged citizens. Let us remain committed to praying for our leaders and participating faithfully in the life of our communities and country.
For the Prime Minister of Canada, the lieutenant governors, and the premiers of the provinces
Lord of all power and mercy, we ask you to assist the Governor General and Prime Minister, as well as the Lieutenant Governors and Premiers of the Provinces, with your favor. Cause them to walk before you in truth and righteousness, and to fulfill their office to your glory and the public good; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God bless Canada and grant wisdom to all those elected to serve.
