I tend to agree with Mr. Elder here. Why do we use this word? Is Elon Musk an African American? Do you have friends or family who are from Egypt? Do they refer to themself as African American? Historically this term has not been used for people with dark skin. Although you can find this term sparsely in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it wasn’t even used in the first half of the twentieth century. Not until Jessee Jackson popularized the term in the seventies and eighties. This obsession with race and identity is racial idolatry; “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21Â ESV).
If this is happening in your circles, in your churches, or in your home, take the controversial step and ask them if the white population born in South Africa over the past century are also African Americans. Step outside of your comfort zone and push the conversation in a fruitful and truthful direction. Religious persecution is coming for us, if it is not already here. Be prepared for the fight, be ready for the struggle, and stand on biblical truth.
